Week One Free Post

Prompted Question Completion:

10. I found a rather helpful website that, in a way, answered my questions about forestry jobs and internships. They describe them as being very helpful but the statistic I found most interesting was the fact that, employment is projected to grow for forestry up to 13% by 2018. Forestry is still a new profession and people are just catching on to the need of management of forests.

7. One of the more important and first researched topics about forestry is wages. Salaries range from $32,000-$75,000. Government agencies usually pay higher wages and commonly have health care plans and pensions.

Overview:

After reading that book and doing some other research I feel more familiarized on the different types of forestry related jobs. In the first week, the research has showed me “urban forestry” which is significant in cities across America. It shows that foresters aren’t only in remote forests of America, looking at the forests as a whole, but there are also specific branches that work within a specific area. The amount of jobs available for this field has really increased my confidence on getting a job after college. It works as motivation for me to succeed in school to become a part of this growing field. There aren’t a lot of people that understand the basic job description of a forester but it all revolves around forest management; I feel better prepared to explain this job description to others. After the start of this project I can further relate to that big idea of protecting, as described in “Forests and Forestry”, American forests and recognizing them as an important natural resource.

    1. Forests are ecosystems and the various types of forestry jobs manage and protect these ecosystems differently. Anything that kills trees is always a main focus like forest fire prevention, invasive species, and disease management of trees are several areas that foresters are trying to combat against to protect forests. Different areas of the U.S. have different issues that are more apparent. Forests fires in some places aren't a main issue because of the amount of rainfall.

Other types of management are on the manufacturing side of forest products. Mass harvesting of trees can have significant effects on the environment. Cutting the right amount of trees and the correct trees is an important focus for foresters.
